DOVER-FOXCROFT- Rebecca Howe and Mia Henderson combined for 34 points to lead the Houlton Shires girls basketball team to a 51-46 win over Foxcroft on Saturday afternoon.
The Shires built the lead to 13 (25-12) in the second quarter as they hit 5 three pointers in the first 16 minutes. Howe shot 8-14 from the free throw line, including 5-8 in the first half. Foxcroft went on an 8-3 lead to end the half to cut the deficit to 28-20 heading into intermission.
The teams didn’t score the first 3:10 of the second half. Meghan Spooner broke that up with a basket followed by an Ainsley Ade hoop to cut the deficit to 28-24. Henderson and Howe extended the lead back up to eight. Destiny Weymouth came off the Ponies bench to score four points in the quarter as Foxcroft cut the deficit to 34-30 heading into the final quarter.
Houlton got a basket from Olivia Henderson and a three pointer from Mia Henderson to start the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run. Foxcroft responded quickly with a 5-0 run of their own. The Ponies made it 42-40 when Kiya Cook made a three pointer with 3:50 remaining. Spooner followed with a three pointer of her own as the Ponies took their only lead with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter. Houlton scored the next five points to take a 47-43 lead. Ade made a three pointer to cut the deficit to 47-46 with 48 seconds left. Howe and Teagan Ewings made two free throws each down the stretch to help Houlton hold off the Ponies.
Cook led the Ponies with 15 points. Spooner recorded 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Ade also finished in double figures with 10. Annie Raynes had four points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Weymouth also had four points, while Natalie Robinson and Jenna Anderson had two and one points respectively. Anderson also had three blocks. Foxcroft (1-8) will host Orono on Tuesday.
Howe led the Shires with 18 points and six rebounds. Henderson had 16 points and six rebounds. Abbie Worthley had six points, six rebounds, and two assists. Drew Warman, Ewings, and Olivia Henderson had five, four, and three points respectively. Houlton (6-4) will host Central Aroostook on Wednesday night.
Houlton shot 10-16 from the free throw line, while Foxcroft shot 1-8.
