In a game of runs by both teams, Malachi Reincke scored a game high 18 points on Friday night to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 69-63 upset of the Husson Eagles at Webster Gymnasium in Castine in men’s NAC basketball action.
Husson (6-8, 4-1 NAC) would get a three-pointer to open up the game by Scott Lewis, but MMA would run off 14 straight points to take an 11 point lead. The Eagles would go on a run of their own scoring the next 13 points, capped off with a Corey Kaiser layup to take a 16-14 lead. The Mariners then came right back with 11 straight for a nine point advantage, that they later turned into the biggest lead of the game at 34-22. Husson would fight back to tie the game several times after trailing by four to seven points early in the second half. The Eagles took their final lead of the contest when Justice Kendall knocked in two free throws with 5:34 left at 60-59. Reincke converted an unconventional three point play about a minute later to give the lead back to MMA for good. The Mariners hit 3-4 from the foul line in the last 37 seconds to put the game away, improving to 3-10 and 1-4 in conference play.
