The Husson Eagles men’s and women’s basketball teams were in action Saturday evening at Northern Vermont-Johnson in North Atlantic Conference play. The women were able to keep their undefeated conference mark in tact, while the men continued to struggle in the second game of the day.
In the women’s game, the Eagles took a 20-7 lead after one quarter and then continued to roll to their ninth straight win improving to 13-7, 10-0 in conference play with an 80-39 victory.
Husson led by 25 after three, and then stretched it to the 41 point final margin by outscoring Johnson 26-10 in the final 10 minutes.
Freshman Bailey Donovan led the way with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks in the Eagles win. Sydney Allen had 15 points, seven rebounds, and six steals. Joan Overman added 12, while both Emma Alley and Vanessa Duarte contributed 10 points a piece. Amorette Rodriguez had 13 points for the Badgers in the loss. Johnson drops to 2-18, 2-8 NAC.
In the men’s game, Husson couldn’t ride the momentum of two straight wins entering the contest and never led as Johnson sent the Eagles back to the .500 mark in conference with an 85-70 victory.
The Badgers scored the first six points of the game, and the Eagles could only get as close as three after that. Johnson would take as much as an 11 point first half lead, and led 37-28 at the half. After trailing by as many as 17 early in the second half, Husson did get within six on a Justice Kendall three point play with 10:02 left. Johnson (5-16, 3-6 NAC) though went on an 18-2 spurt to go up by 22 their largest of the day to put the game away.
Kendall and Brett Cunningham had 13 points a piece in the Husson loss. Scott Lewis and DJ Bussey scored 11 and 10 points off the bench respectively. The Eagles fall to 8-13, 5-5 NAC. Robert Dubose had a game high 15 points to lead Johnson to the win. Floyd Davis had 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Kiyl Mack had 12 points, while Ayodeji Shokeye also added 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. The Badgers outrebounded the Eagles 37-26, including 10 on the offensive end.
Both the men’s and women’s teams head to Northern Vermont-Lyndon for NAC games beginning with the women at 12 noon Sunday.
