Maine rolls at Albany for fifth straight win

Anne Simon led four players in double figures with a game high 17 points on Saturday evening, as the Maine Black Bears rolled past the Albany Great Danes 65-44 in an America East women’s basketball matchup at SEFCU Arena in Albany, New York.

The first quarter featured nine lead changes. The biggest lead was five held by Maine late in the first quarter on a Maddy McVicar free throw, but Albany scored the last five of the opening 10 minutes to tie it 17-17. Helene Haegerstrand gave the Great Danes their last lead of the day 23-22 on a jumper 2:22 into the second quarter. Dor Saar regained the lead for the Black Bears for good about two minutes later with a three-pointer. Maine built the advantage to nine at halftime on another Saar jumper 34-25.

Simon had six in the third quarter as Maine (13-14, 9-4 America East) built the lead to 10 by the end of the 10 minutes. Albany could only get as close as five in the period and the rest of the way. The final margin of 21 was the biggest for the Black Bears on the day in winning their fifth straight game.

Simon added five rebounds to go along with her game high point total in the Maine win. McVicar had 14 points and eight rebounds. Maeve Carroll chipped in 13 points and four rebounds, while Saar also got into double figures with 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Amanda Kantzy led Albany in the loss with 12 points and eight rebounds. Alexi Schecter added 10 points and four rebounds. The Great Danes fall to 9-16, 5-7 in conference play. Maine will host first place Stony Brook in the regular season finale next Sunday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day at the Cross Insurance Center.
