Maine women’s hockey upsets BU in Hockey East quarterfinal

Ida Kuoppala scored in double overtime on Friday night, as the Maine Black Bears upset the #8 Boston University Terriers 3-2 at Agannis Arena in Boston in game one of a best of three Hockey East women’s quarterfinal series.

Vendula Pribylova and Ali Beltz staked visiting Maine to a 2-0 lead scoring goals at 3:47 of the first period and 1:20 of the second respectively. Nara Elia notched the first goal of the game for second seeded Boston University at 5:15 of the middle period to slice the deficit to 2-1. Elia would send the game into overtime when she would tie the game at 16:52 of the third period. The Terriers had a chance on the powerplay 25 seconds into the first overtime but couldn’t convert. Kuoppala got an assist from Pribylova at 15:21 of the second overtime that ended the game. It is the first win of the season over Boston University, as Maine had gone 0-2-1 against their rivals in the regular season.

Taylor Leech, Ally Johnson, and Kuoppala also added an assist each in the Maine win. Carly Jackson made 57 saves in net, as the Black Bears were outshot 59-40. Corinne Schroeder made 37 stops in the loss for Boston University.  The Terriers fall to 24-7-4. Maine who is the #7 seed in Hockey East, improves to 13-14-8. Maine was 0-2 on the powerplay, while BU went 1-5. Game two is scheduled for a 3 p.m. puck drop on Saturday afternoon.
