July 22, 2020

As Major League Baseball gets set for an abbreviated 60 game regular season, outfielder Mookie Betts is set to sign a 12 year extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers as announced on Wednesday.

Betts, 27, hasn’t played in one game yet with the team but the former Red Sox outfielder signed a one year 27 million dollar deal during the offseason and was expected to test free agency after the 2020 season. The contract as a whole is worth 375 million over 13 years, with a record 65 million dollar signing bonus. The signing will also break a record that previously belonged to Mike Trout at 360 million. Betts will make a pro-rated amount for this season of 10 million. The story was first reported by Lou Merloni via MLB reporter Jeff Passan.

Betts has played in 794 career games all with Boston since 2014 and has a .301 batting average with 139 homeruns and 470 RBI in 3,629 plate appearances. He led the majors in batting average in 2018 at .346 where he added 32 homeruns and 80 RBI in 136 games to lead the Sox to a World Series title. His best season was 2016 where he batted .318 with 31 homers and 113 RBI in 158 games.
