The New England Patriots announced on Thursday that Cam Newton has officially been named the starting quarterback for the 2020 season.
The nine year veteran who has spent his entire career with the Carolina Panthers, takes over for the departed 20 year veteran Tom Brady looking to lead New England to their 12th consecutive AFC East title. He had his best year in 2015 leading Carolina to an NFC South division title and a 15-1 regular season record and an appearance in the Super Bowl where they lost to the Denver Broncos. That season he passed for 35 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. In his nine year career with the Panthers he played in seven playoff games, led 15 comebacks, and engineered 17 game winning drives. Overall he has made 124 starts throwing 182 touchdowns against 108 interceptions, with a 60% completion percentage. He is the all-time passing leader in Carolina and also added 58 rushing touchdowns, but only played in two games in 2019 before being released by the team in March of this year and signing with the Patriots on June 28.
The team also announced Newton as a team captain on this years squad. Also named captains on offense were James White and David Andrews. The defensive captains are Devin McCourty, Stephon Gilmore, Lawerence Guy, Ja’Whaun Bentley, and Matthew Slater. New England opens September 13 against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.
