The Boston Celtics orginazation received bad news on Tuesday, learning that former player, coach, and legendary broadcaster Tom Heinsohn passed away at the age of 86.
Heinsohn has been involved with all 17 of the clubs World Championships in some capacity. In his playing days (1956-65) he played with such stars as Bob Cousy and Bill Russell, collecting eight titles in nine seasons and being named an All-Star six times on his way to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. As a coach (1969-78) he led Boston to titles in 1974 and 1976. He is one of only four people inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame both as a player (1986) and as a coach (2015). His number 15 is retired and flies high above TD Garden. He is widely known for his work also as color commentator for Celtics broadcasts, beside play by play guy Mike Gorman since 1981.
