January 3, 2021

At Lundholm Gym in Durham, New Hampshire, Kelly Fogarty scored 30 points and hit a school record 10 three-pointers on Sunday afternoon as the Maine Black Bears bounced back from their first loss on Saturday by rolling past the New Hampshire Wildcats 76-56 in women’s America East basketball action.

After UNH (2-7, 2-4 America East) had three early leads of three points each, Maine took control with a 13-0 run to end the first quarter for a 20-10 lead and extended that into the second to a 20-0 spurt for a 17 point advantage. They led 41-23 at the half and never looked back, leading by as many as 27 in the third quarter. The story of the day was Fogarty, after some terrible shooting struggles over her first 6 games of the season (6-32 field goals). Sunday all her shots were from behind the arc (10-17), breaking her own record of nine that she had against Husson in December 2019. Blanca Millan added 14 points. Anne Simon also chipped in nine, and freshman guard Alba Orios played some solid minutes and had seven points off the bench. Black Bears shot 51% from the floor and 13-30 (43%) from three-point range. Amanda Torres had 12 points and Helena Delaruelle 10 to pace UNH in the loss. Maine (6-1, 3-1) is back at home to play games there for first time since March when they host NJIT next Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Gym in Orono.

At Memorial Gym in Orono, the UNH Wildcats got a game high 23 points from Jayden Martinez Sunday afternoon to pick up the America East men’s basketball split with a 62-58 win over Maine.

Maine (1-4, 1-3 America East) had a six point lead about seven minutes into action on a Adefolalrin Adetogun layup at 13-7, but UNH also held leads of three points several times in the first half and would lead 30-29 at the halftime break. A 6-0 Wildcats run gave them a seven point lead to start the second half, before an 8-0 run later in the half gave them their largest lead of day at 60-46 with 5:13 left to play. No quit in the Black Bears though, as Ja’Shon Wright- McLeish would score 10 of the next 12 points for the hosts during a 12-0 spurt that cut it to 60-58 with 17 seconds remaining. Marque Maultsby missed two from the line for UNH, but the ‘Cats got the rebound and Martinez hit the back end of two at line for a three point lead. Ata Tugut had a final look at a three-pointer to tie it for Maine in the closing seconds, but the shot would miss and Maultsby hit a final free throw to put the game away. Wright-McLeish led Maine in the loss with 12 points, while Stepane Ingo had 10 points and 17 rebounds, and Mykhalio Yagodin also got into double figures with 10 points. Maine native and former George Stevens Academy standout Taylor Schildroth also got his first career college start. UNH improves to 4-3 and 3-1 in the conference with the win. The Black Bears are on the road at NJIT for a pair of games next Saturday and Sunday.
