January 22, 2021

Rob Mastrosimone scored 1:15 into overtime Friday evening, leading the Boston University Terriers to a 3-2 win over the Maine Black Bears in Hockey East men’s action at Walter Brown Arena in Boston.

David Farrance wasted no time in the first putting Boston University ahead. Farrance scored unassisted after gathering a loose puck and firing one high center point past Maine goaltender Victor Ostman at 1:41. The Terriers had three powerplay opportunities in the opening period to try to extend the lead, but Adam Dawe scored shorthanded to even things at 17:44. Dawe raced to a loose puck near the left faceoff circle, and turned and fired with a shot that eluded BU goalie Drew Commesso five hole to make it 1-1. Farrance continued his hot play with his 10th point in his sixth game, helping set up Markus Boguslavsky for a partial breakaway goal at 3:38 of the second to put the hosts back ahead 2-1. The Black Bears had two huge chances late in the period on the powerplay to try to equalize it, when Lynden Breen swept one just wide after a scramble and had a half open net and also a centering pass that Eduards Tralmaks hit off the post to the right of Commesso. Freshman Brad Morrissey tied it in the third for Maine after some pressure in the BU zone, firing in a slapshot from the high slot at 6:34. Both teams had good chances down the stretch, but the goaltenders stood strong to force overtime. The game winner came after some immediate pressure from the Terriers in the offensive zone. Mastrosimone took a drop pass in the high slot and fired a hard shot that beat Ostman up high to end it.

Ostman made 20 saves in the loss for Maine. Tralmaks, Kabore Dunn, and Tristan Poissant had assists as the Black Bears drop to 2-6-1 on the season. Commesso made 23 saves in the win for Boston University, while Farrance and Mastrosimone both had a goal and an assist as the Terriers improve to 4-1-1. The teams combined to go 0-11 on the powerplay. The two game series finishes up at 1 p.m. Saturday.
