Former Bangor High School and University of Maine standout Justin Courtney announced in a Facebook post that he has signed with the Los Angeles Angels.
Courtney said in his post, “The past few years of baseball have been a grind… but it has turned into a great story. Tommy John surgery in 2018, limited playing time at Maine in 2019, zero games in 2020… all to end up with me signing with the Los Angeles Angels feels surreal.” Click here to read the full post from Courtney.
In 2014, Courtney went 7-1 with a 1.20 ERA with 77 strikeouts, including a one hit shutout in the Class A state championship game. He also led Bangor to the 2014 American Legion Maine State Championship.
Courtney had an outstanding freshmen year for the Black Bears in 2015. He was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American… named to the America East Second Team… named to the America East All-Rookie Team… named America East Co-Pitcher of the Week (5/4) and America East Rookie of the Week (5/18)… led the team with a 3.24 ERA… finished 5-6 on the season… finished second on the team in wins (5) and innings pitched (72.1)… pitched a pair of complete games.
Courtney concluded his statement saying, “Now the real work begins with the Angels”
Courtney was named Eastern Maine Sports Bangor high school top athlete.
The Angels spring training home is in Tempe, Arizona and they are scheduled to report in two weeks.
