Mathew Barzal scored a third period game winning powerplay goal on Saturday night and Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a pair of goals, as the New York Islanders ended the Boston Bruins 10 game point streak with a 4-2 win at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY.
Boston (10-2-2) picked up where it left off, getting a first period goal to take the lead. Brad Marchand scored his ninth of the season, netting a wrist shot from the low slot after a backhanded feed from Patrice Bergeron from behind the goal at 8:41 of the first period. New York (6-4-3) though took the lead when Pageau scored at 11:36, and Jordan Eberle tallied one at 15:16. The Bruins, who were outplayed in the first two periods, stayed with it when Marchand from the left wing found Bergeron in the low slot and the captains wrist shot found the twine at 16:51 of the second to tie it despite being outshot by the Islanders 30-16 over the first 40 minutes. Barzal got the game winner when he one timed a feed from the left faceoff circle on a 2 on 1 down low on the powerplay off a feed from Anders Lee at 5:30 of the third. Boston went on a powerplay of their own with 6:23 left, but it was New York who put the game away as Pageau scored shorthanded 55 seconds later. The regulation loss is only the second of the season for the B’s, the first one since January 18 also to the Islanders.
Tuuka Rask stopped 38 of 42 shots in the net in the loss for Boston. Marchand and Bergeron both had a goal and an assist, and David Pastrnak also added had two assists on the night. Pageau had the two goals, Eberle had a goal and an assist, and Leo Komarov had two assists to lead New York in the win. Semyon Valarmov had 28 saves in net. The Bruins will host the New Jersey Devils Monday night.
