The Maine women’s basketball team put four players in double figures and used a big second quarter run Saturday afternoon, en route to an 82-53 win over the UNH Wildcats at Memorial Gym in Orono. The game was the last regular season game of the 2020-21 campaign.
Maine (16-2, 13-2 America East) opened up with a 24-9 lead after one quarter. The visitors from UNH used a 7-2 run to cut that deficit to 26-16 early in the second, but the Black Bears scored 17 straight points and went on a 22-5 run to take a 48-21 lead into halftime. The hosts led by as many as 33 in the second half and the Wildcats never got the lead inside of 25 points.
Blanca Millan and Anne Simon led the way in the win with 21 points and nine rebounds each. Maeve Carroll and Kelly Fogarty both also reached double figures with 12 points a piece. Carroll also added four rebounds and five assists. Dor Saar had four assists in the game as well, and became the first player ever at UMaine to have 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career. Millan also became just the third Black Bear ever to play 4000+ minutes (Liz Wood and Sigi Koizar). Amanda Torres had 16 points in the UNH loss, as the Wildcats finish the regular season at 5-14, 5-11 in AE. Maine will have a bye week during the quarterfinal round of the conference playoffs next weekend, and will then host the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals on Sunday, March 7.
