Maine women’s hockey ties at Holy Cross, men swept at BC

The University of Maine hockey teams both were back in action Saturday evening trying to pick up weekend splits down in Massachusetts against Holy Cross and Boston College.

At the Hart Center in Worcester, Massachusetts the Maine women’s team battled through 60 minutes and also a scoreless overtime period at Holy Cross, ending officially in a 1-1 tie. However, Maine took the extra point in the standings with a shootout victory.

Both the goals came in the first period of play, as Millie Sirum gave Holy Cross the lead at 13:06 before Old Towns Olivia King scored her first collegiate goal at the 16 minute mark for Maine to end the scoring on the evening. Loryn Porter made 27 saves for the Black Bears, while Jada Brenon was big again in the Crusaders net with 35 stops. Morgan Trimper and Maddie Giordano had an assist each for Maine, as their record goes to 7-8-1, 7-8-1 in Hockey East. Holy Cross goes to 4-14-1, 4-14-1 HE.

At Kelly Rink in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts the #1 Boston College Eagles dominated the Maine Black Bears on chances and shots on goal getting three different goal scorers in a 3-0 win to sweep the weekend Hockey East men’s series.

Patrick Giles got the scoring started at the 13:30 mark of the second period that turned out to be the game winner. He was helped on assists by Drew Helleson and Mark McLaughlin. The Eagles sewed up the win getting two goals just 33 seconds apart in the third by Alex Newhook at 10:51 on the powerplay, and Colby Ambrosio at 11:24. Boston College (15-3-1, 15-3-1 Hockey East) outshot Maine 59-24 in the game. Victor Ostman stopped 56 shots in net in the fifth straight loss for the Black Bears, dropping their record to 2-9-1, 2-9-1 HE. Spencer Knight stopped all 24 shots for BC for his third shutout of the season.
