PCHS boys roll to quarterfinal win over Greenville

GUILFORD- Kobe Gilbert had a game high 30 points, and all eight players got into the scorebook on Monday evening as the Piscataquis Community High School Pirates (PCHS) cruised to a 72-31 Covid Cup Penquis League quarterfinal boys basketball win over the Greenville Lakers.

It was a game of runs for the Pirates. Gilbert scored the first basket, and then the Lakers took their only lead on a three-pointer by Andrew Pierce. It was all PCHS after that, as their first run of 12-0 made it 14-3. After Greenville (0-13) cut it to 15-8, the hosts closed out the first quarter on an 11-0 spurt making it 26-8. Gilbert had 16 of those points in the first eight minutes. The Lakers cut it to 12 scoring eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter, but again it was an 11-2 advantage for PCHS to close out the half making it 39-18 at halftime. Another big third quarter put the game away. The Pirates used a 14-2 run to start it, and outscored Greenville 24-5 in the period to push the advantage to 40. PCHS (7-6) would lead by as many as 44 in the final quarter, advancing to a Wednesday semifinal game.

Gilbert added 14 rebounds, four steals, and two assists to his point total. He was named the Our FAMBily Restaurant Player of the Game. Matt Robinson had 11 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Robinson earned the Jersey Sub Unsung Hero of the Game. Also contributing in the win was Matt Chadbourne with nine points and seven rebounds, Isiah Conary six points and seven rebounds, Christian Easler six points, nine rebounds, and two assists, Buddy Hutchins six points and five rebounds, Alex Lyon four points and five rebounds, and Sean Leland put in one point. The Pirates dominated the rebounds 61-14. Greenville was led by Dominick Murray who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Pierce chipped in six points, Devin O’Connor four points and four rebounds, and Dale Turner had a basket for two points. PCHS will travel to Dexter for a Covid Cup Penquis League semifinal on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The teams split their two meetings in the regular season.
