The Maine Black Bears picked up a doubleheader sweep in Union, New Jersey on Saturday afternoon, taking three of the four America East games on the weekend with 10-1 and 14-2 wins over New Jersey Institute of Technology in college baseball action.
In game one, Maine scored four in the first inning and three more in the third to roll to the win. Quinn McDaniel had three hits, Sean Lawlor two hits and two RBI, Colby Emmerz a two run single, and Jake Marquez added a three run double. Alex McKenney (3-2) went the distance allowing one run (none earned) on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings to pick up the victory.
In game two, NJIT took an early 1-0 lead as the Black Bears got off to a slow start but would turn it on with three runs in the fourth inning, and then five in both the fifth and eighth to complete the series win. Lawlor had three hits and three RBI, with all runs knocked in on a three run homerun in the fifth inning. Joe Bramanti had three hits and two RBI, McDaniel had a two run homer with two hits and three knocked in, Ryan Turenne two hits and two RBI, and Jake Rainess added a hit for two RBI. Matt Pushard started and got a no decision allowing one run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Tyler Nielsen (1-1) picked up the win in relief allowing no runs on just one hit with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
Maine improves to 11-8, 6-5 in America East play and will return home for open up a four game conference series with Hartford next Saturday at Mahaney Diamond.
