The University of Maryland-Baltimore County softball team picked up an America East doubleheader sweep over the Maine Black Bears Saturday afternoon by scores of 11-0 and 4-0 in Baltimore, Maryland.
In the first game, the Retrievers scored nine runs over the second and third innings and cruised to the mercy rule win. Sierra Pierce, Anna Lonchar, and Courtney Coppersmith each had two hits with Lonchar driving in two runs, and Meghan Dempsey and Ashley Della Guardia also adding two RBI each. Kya Enos had two hits for the Black Bears, with Lilly Volk (0-2) taking the loss in the circle allowing five runs on six hits in 2.0 innings.
UMBC would complete the sweep in the second game with a good pitching performance from Madie Leach. In a scorless game in the bottom of the fourth, the Retrievers got the first two runners on before Pierce hit a three-run homer to left center field. Della Guardia added an RBI double in the fifth inning. Leach (4-3) only allowed two hits in 5.0 innings to get the win. Jasmine Gray had both hits for the visitors, while Kyleigh O’Donnell (9-5) was charged with the pitching loss allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings. Maine is now 11-18, 7-7 in America East while UMBC goes to 19-10, 8-4 in AE. The teams will finish off the three game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon.
