June 14, 2021

The Toronto Blue Jays pounded out 20 hits, including eight homeruns on Sunday afternoon and annihilated the Boston Red Sox 18-4 at Fenway Park.

Boston starting pitcher Martin Perez (4-4) only got through 1.1 innings in taking the loss allowing five runs on six hits. Teoscar Hernandez had a three-run first inning homerun, while Loudes Gurriel Jr. also had a solo shot. Marcus Semien had made it 5-0 with a solo shot of his own in the second, before Xander Bogaerts got the Sox on the board with a long solo homer in the bottom half of the second inning. Hernandez would hit a second three-run homer in the fourth, while Bo Bichette had a two-run shot, Cavin Biggio a solo homer, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. along with Rowdy Tellez each added two-run homeruns. For Guerrero Jr. that was his league leading 21st of the season. The eight long balls allowed by Boston (39-27) was a team record for one game. Kike Hernandez had a two-run double and Bobby Dalbec had a solo homerun for the hosts in the loss. The Sox also pitched position players Marwin Gonzalez and Christian Arroyo in the game to help save bullpen arms.

Robbie Ray (4-2) earned the win on the mound for Toronto allowing three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Red Sox will try to split the four game series on Monday night at 7:10. Boston sends RHP Nathan Eovaldi (7-3, 4.11 ERA) to the bump, to be opposed by RHP Alek Manoah (1-0, 3.14) for Toronto.
