Red Sox trade for all-star pitcher

On Tuesday, 27-year-old  Drew Pomeranz represented the hometown San Diego Padres at the all-star game. Tomorrow night, Pomeranz will join his new Boston Red Sox teammates at Yankee stadium.

The Red Sox traded 18-year-old pitcher Anderson Espinoza for Pomeranz.  Espinoza will be the Padres top prospect. Pomeranz has an ERA of 2.47, trailing only Madison Bumgarner, Clayton Kershaw, and Johnny Cueto in the national league. Pomeranz will join the rotation, most likely sending Clay Buchholz to the bullpen.  Pomeranz is under contract through the 2018 season.

Dave Dombrowksi has acquired Brad Ziegler, Aaron Hill, Manny Martinez, and Pomeranz in the last week.  With still 18 days left until the trade deadline, expect Dombrowski to go get what the Red Sox need.

Eduardo Rodriguez will take the mound on Friday night against the Yankees in the first game after the all-star break. Rodriguez performance will determine if starting pitching is still a need. The bullpen remains the biggest need. Ziegler was a great pickup, however the Red Sox have Craig Kimbrel on the DL, an inconsistent and aging Koji Uehara, and Junichi Tazawa was placed on the disabled list on Thursday. That is something the Red Sox can hopefully fix without giving up any top prospects.
