The Mississippi State Bulldogs made school history on Wednesday night, winning the first National Championship in any sport with a 9-0 victory in the deciding game of the College Baseball World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
After Vanderbilt had won the opening game of the best of three easily 8-2, Mississippi State beat the Commodores 13-2 in game two before shutting them down in the finale to capture the title and finish with a final record of 50-18. Vanderbilt ends at 49-18, having won the last World Series played in 2019. The story was the pitching, as the Bulldogs combined for a one-hit shutout led by starter Will Bednar (9-1) who didn’t allow a hit in his 6.0 innings on the hill. Kumar Rocker (14-4), who is slated to be a high pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, took the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings. Kellum Clark had a three-run homer for Mississippi State, while Rowdey Jordan had three hits, and Luke Hancock and Logan Tanner had two hits and two RBI a piece. This was the 12th trip to Omaha and the CWS for the Bulldogs.
