The Boston Red Sox announced Sunday that they have locked up one of their biggest key bullpen arms for the next two seasons, in signing closer Matt Barnes to an extension.
Barnes, who has spent his entire professional baseball career with Boston, was signed in the first round (19th overall) in the 2011 MLB Draft. He has 360 career relief appearances at the big league level, with a 30-23 record, 34 saves, a 3.94 earned run average, and 500 strikeouts. His 360 appearances are fourth all-time with the Red Sox behind Bob Stanley, Mike Timlin, and Jonathan Papelbon. This season he was named to the All-Star game in Colorado and has 19 saves in 23 chances with a 2.68 ERA, with just a .171 batting average against striking out 62 and walking 10 in 37.1 innings so far.
Terms of the deal is two years, $18.75 million for the right hander, with a club option:
2022- 7.25 million
2023- 7.5 million
2024- 8 million (club option)
Buyout- 2.25 million
Signing Bonus- 1.75 million
Total Guarantee- 18.75 million
