Portland, Maine- Tyreque Reed hit a walkoff two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night, giving the Portland Sea Dogs a 6-4 win over the Harrisburg Senators at Hadlock Field. It is the second straight night that Portland has won in walkoff fashion.
Portland had rallied from down four in the ninth inning Friday night to force extra innings before winning it 7-6 in 10. The Sea Dogs (44-24) looked to be in good shape on Saturday when they scored three times in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead when Eric Sogard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Pedro Castellanos singled in a run, and Reed added an RBI sacrifice fly. Harrisburg (25-45) though rallied back in their last at bat in the top of the ninth against Zack Kelly. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, and Gilbert Lara hit a two-run double to tie it. Kelly kept it 4-4 by striking out the next three batters consecutively. Devlin Granberg singled to start the bottom of the ninth for the hosts, and then Reed cleared the center field wall on an 0-2 pitch for his first homerun of the season to end it. Portland was known as the Maine Red Snappers for the game, paying homage to the famous Maine red hot dog.
Kelly (3-1) got credited with the win but also a blown save. Josh Winckowski started and allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits in 7.0 innings. Granberg and Reed had two hits a piece, with Reed finishing with four RBI. Pearson McMahan (4-3) took the loss for Harrisburg, while Ryan Tapani had a blown save when the Sea Dogs rallied in the seventh. Portland guaranteed a series win in the victory, taking four of the first five games. Game six is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. with rain in the forecast. The Senators are expected to go with Jackson Tetreault on the hill, while Chris Sale is expected to make another rehab start for the ‘Dogs.
