At Howland Friday, Penobscot Valley beat Piscataquis Community 5-0 in girl’s soccer action, in both team’s season opener.
The teams were deadlocked midway through the first half, until PVHS’ Lila Cummings drew a penalty inside the box. Senior Ali Gilman calmly sent the penalty kick into the back of the net to start the scoring. Cummings would later send a cross to senior Maggie LeBlanc, who one-touched it into the left side of the goal. The game remained 2-0 at the half.
Gilman would put away another penalty kick at the 23 minute mark of the second half to open the game up. Cummings and senior Julia Durost would round out the scoring on unassisted goals.
Penobscot Valley’s Emilee Ireland got credit for the shutout, saving three shots. They will travel to Searspost Wednesday for their next game. PCHS’ Lauren Robinson saved 23 shots. The Pirates host Dexter on Thursday.
