Maine Field Hockey falls twice in Illinois over the weekend

The #25 University of Maine Field Hockey team continued non-conference play on Saturday and Sunday with games against #23 Kent State and #5 Northwestern, with both contests played at Northwestern University.

On Saturday, Maine took a 1-0 first quarter lead that held until the third quarter and then fell behind twice by a goal only to rally and force overtime and eventually double overtime. Brooke Sulinski scored 9:33 into the opening quarter, assisted by Tereza Holubcova. The Golden Flashes of Kent State evened it on a goal by Sydney Washburn 3:51 into the second half. KSU then took the lead 41 seconds later when Luisa Knapp scored. Sydney Meader tied it back up for Maine 2-2 later in the third with an unassisted marker, but only for 38 seconds as Maria Cambra Soler regained the lead for KSU. Sulinski sent the game to overtime scoring 7:01 into the fourth to make it 3-3. Helena Cambra Soler buried the game winner for the Golden Flashes on a rebound at the 3:52 mark of double overtime. Maine outshot Kent State 14-13, while the Flashes had a 12-10 advantage on penalty corners. Mia Borley made nine saves in the loss, while Azure Fernaler made 11 in the win. KSU improved to 4-2.

On Sunday, Maine was dominated in a 5-0 loss to the fifth ranked Northwestern Wildcats. Lauren Wadas scored the only goal they needed at 3:16 of the first quarter. Bente Baekers scored the next three goals for a hat trick, and Liese Wareham added the final marker in the fourth. Shots on goal ended up 24-2 Northwestern, 31-3 in attempts, and also a 12-3 Wildcats advantage in penalty corners. Mia Borley made 16 saves over the first 52:37, while Mallory Drayer stopped three of four shots in relief. Annabel Skubisz stopped the only two Black Bears shot in net for NU, while Jamie Marold played the final quarter and didn’t face any shots. Northwestern is now 6-1 on the season.

Maine (1-5) returns back home for more non-conference play when they host Merrimack on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
