No JD or Sale as Red Sox prepare for Wild Card game

October 5, 2021

The Boston Red Sox announced JD Martinez and Chris Sale will be unavailable on Tuesday night when they host the New York Yankees in a one game wild card playoff at Fenway Park.

Martinez, who suffered a mildly sprained ankle on Sunday in Washington, would be available if Boston wins and advances to the American League Division Series against Tampa Bay says manager Alex Cora. The Sox will carry 12 pitchers on the roster for tonight’s game, so Sale will not pitch on the two days rest after a shaky outing where he only lasted 2.1 innings against the Nationals Sunday. They do have key lefty Josh Taylor out of the bullpen and available on the roster, as he is back after dealing with a lower back issue. They also carry third string catcher Connor Wong and outfielder Jarren Duran.

Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA) will get the start on the mound against Yankees righty Gerrit Cole (16-8, 3.23) with first pitch scheduled for 8:08 p.m. Boston won the season series 10-9, but the pinstrippers won six of the last seven head to head after the Sox has taken nine of the first 12. Here is a look at tonight’s lineups for both teams-

NYY: 1. Rizzo 1B, 2. Judge RF, 3. Stanton DH, 4. Gallo LF, 5. Torres 2B, 6. Gardner CF, 7. Urshela 3B, 8. Higashioka C, 9. Velazquez SS/SP-Cole
