Alina Gerke scored a game winning third quarter goal Friday afternoon in leading the Vermont Catamounts to a 3-1 win over the Maine Black Bears in America East Field Hockey action at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vermont. The loss snaps an eight game win streak by Maine, and is also their first conference loss of the season.
After a scoreless first quarter, Clodagh Ferry gave Vermont a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal with 3:57 left in the first half. The tally was set up on an assist by Sophia Drees. Maine got the equalizer early in the third at 3:14 when Brooke Sulinski tallied on a helper from Chloe Walton. Just 42 seconds later though Gerke scored the game winner for the Catamounts on another assist by Drees. Ferry scored her second of the day and insurance marker with 9:28 left to play with an assist going to Puck Kwaspen.
Mia Borley made two saves on five shots in goal in the loss for Maine, who drops to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in America East play. Sierra Espeland made two saves as well in net for Vermont who goes to 10-5, 3-3 in AE. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. in a non-conference neutral site matchup with winless Bryant (0-13) at the University of New Hampshire.
