Anthony Roberts scored a career high 40 points on Sunday afternoon, as the Stony Brook Seawolves defeated the Maine Black Bears 85-74 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor in America East men’s basketball action.
After the teams swapped the lead several times in the first half, Maine (5-19, 2-11 America East) had their biggest lead at 26-22. With the score 37-37, Stony Brook went on a late 9-0 run to take a 46-37 advantage. Bryron Ireland would hit a halfcourt shot for the Black Bears at the halftime buzzer to slice it to 46-40 at the break. The Seawolves extended that to 12 by scoring the first six points of the second half. A three-pointer by Ja’Shon Wright-McLeish got Maine within seven, which is as close as they’d get the rest of the way. After Wright-McLeish nailed another three-pointer to once again cut the deficit to seven, Stony Brook used an 11-2 spurt helped by two three-pointers by Roberts to take their biggest lead of the day at 16 with 8:24 left to put it away.
Maks Klanjscek scored 24 points and dished out five assists in the loss for Maine. He went 6-10 from the three-point arc. Vukasin Masic was the only other Black Bear in double figures with 14 points. Roberts added six rebounds and six assists to his career high point total for Stony Brook. He shot 14-25 from the floor (9-12 three-pointers). Tykei Greene added 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Seawolves are now 15-10, 7-5 in conference play. Maine plays at Hartford on Wednesday night.
