NHL announces more award winners for the 2021-22 season

June 22, 2022

The NHL announced more of their annual end of the season awards on Tuesday night. Boston Bruins rookie goaltender Jeremy Swayman was named to the All-Rookie team, and finished fifth in the Calder Trophy voting (top NHL rookie). Defenseman Charlie McAvoy was also named to the NHL Second Team, and finished fourth in the Norris Trophy voting (top defenseman).

Swayman beat out Alex Nedeljkovic (Detroit), Kaapo Kahkonen (Minnesota), and Spencer Knight (Florida) for the spot as goaltender on the rookie team. He is the first Boston player since McAvoy to make the team, and the first Bruins goaltender since Andrew Raycroft (2003-04) to receive the honor. Raycroft won the Calder Trophy that season as the top rookie in the league. The Alaskan native and former product of the University of Maine, Swayman finished his first full season in the NHL with a 23-14-3 record, a 2.41 goals against average, and a save percentage of .914. He posted three regular season shutouts, and played five of the seven games in a first round playoff loss to Carolina going 3-2 with a 2.63 GAA and a .911 save percentage.

McAvoy earned his first postseason All-Star Team Award. He is the first Boston defenseman since Zdeno Chara to earn a spot on either team, as Chara made the first team in the 2013-14 season. The 24 year old set career highs in games played (78), goals (10), assists (46), points (56), plus/minus (plus 31), and time on ice (24:38). Fourth place in the Norris is the highest yet for McAvoy, who finished fifth last season and 10th in 2019-20.

This recognition for the Bruins comes after Patrice Bergeron won his record fifth Selke Trophy (forward with the most defensive skill) back on June 5. Here is the list of the five winners from Tuesday:
