Both the University of Maine Women’s Soccer team and Field Hockey teams were in action on Friday afternoon on the road and it was a split for the Black Bear teams in Rhode Island and Boston respectively.
At Smithfield, Rhode Island the Maine Women’s Soccer team ended a two game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout victory over host Bryant.
5:26 into the contest, Anetra Byfield scored the first goal of the game and her third of the year for Maine. Kaitlyn Ball finished off the scoring on the day with a goal 68:19 in, also her third of the season.
Maine only allowed five shots on goal for the game but only had five on goal also, with two finding the back of the net. It was the third shutout of the year for the Bears, and third for goalkeeper Annalena Kriebisch, to help Maine improve to 4-2-0.
Maine will stay in Rhode Island and will face URI on Sunday afternoon with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Maine Field Hockey team dropped their first game of the year on Friday afternoon, losing 2-1 to #13 Boston University in Boston.
After a scoreless first half, Hester Van der Laan scored 15 minutes into half number two to make it 1-0 Terriers. Ally Hammel padded the BU lead with three minutes left to make it 2-0.
Maine got a goal from Samantha Wagg on a penalty corner with less than two minutes left for the only Black Bear score on the day.
Emma Cochran suffered the loss in net for Maine as the Bears slip to 4-1. Boston University is now 5-0.
Maine stays in Boston and will face University of California-Davis for a 3 p.m. start in a neutral site contest Saturday.
