Durost’s hat trick paces the scoring in another Lady Howler win

September 8, 2022

At Howland, freshman Savannah Durost scored two first half goals and one in the second half, en route to the hat trick as Penobscot Valley beat Searsport 9-0.

After a scoreless first ten minutes, Emma Potter sent a high cross in the middle of the goalie box to Ashlyn St. Cyr.  St. Cyr tapped it to Ellie Austin who kicked it in for the goal. Five minutes later, Lila Cummings drilled a direct kick off the crossbar. Durost shot the deflection over the goalkeepers head and into the opposite corner. St. Cyr got her second assist of the game, when she streaked wide with the ball drawing the defenders, then sending a cross to a wide open Rylee Moulton who went one on one with the goalie for the goal.

Durost struck again with about nine minutes to go in the half, this time off a cross from Lauren Veino.  Three minutes later St. Cyr attacked a Searsport goal kick on the outside, and crossed it into Austin for the score. The final goal of the half occurred when Cummings sent a beautiful pass from midfield ahead of the defensive line, where Veino collected and beat the keeper.

Moulton scored her second goal (and fourth of the season) unassisted, about 15 minutes into the second half. Cummings later sent a nice cross to Durost, who one-touched it in for her third goal of the game.  Cummings scored unassisted to complete the scoring in the 9-0 win.

Freshman goalie Lauryn Smart registered her first varsity shutout as she saved all five shots that came her way. Penobscot Valley improves to 2-0 in the early season, and will face undefeated Penquis on Monday. Searsport goalie Josh Bragdon made 25 saves on 38 shots. The Vikings drop to 0-2 and will travel to George Stevens Academy on Saturday.
