A day after pounding out 20 hits in a blowout win over Albany, the Maine Black Bears had 19 more on Saturday afternoon to take game two of the weekend America East baseball series over the Great Danes 12-1 at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. The win improves the Maine conference mark to 8-0, a new program record.
Jeremiah Jenkins, who had six RBI in the win Friday, put Maine up early and for good with a two-run homerun to right field in the first inning. Albany (3-19-1, 0-8 America East) did cut the deficit in half on an RBI groundout from Owen Silliman in the second, but it was all Black Bears after that. Connor Goodman had an RBI groundout and Colin Plante an infield RBI single in the third to make it 4-1, and Ryan Turenne hit a solo homerun to right in the fifth to make it 5-1. The hosts put it away over the seventh and eighth innings highlighted by a solo homer by Jake Rainess to right, and a three-run double to left center field by Jake Marquez.
Plante and Quinn McDaniel had four hits each, while Rainess and Myles Sargent had three a piece in the victory. Marquez had four RBI and Plante had three. Caleb Leys (2-0) got the win on the mound allowing just one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Jason Bottari had two hits for Albany, and Matthew Mariano (1-2) allowed five runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings in being tagged with the loss on the hill. Maine (14-11, 8-0 in America East) will go for the three game sweep and tries to extend their win streak to eight in the series finale at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
