GUILFORD—- Brady Gaw had three hits, including the game winning hit and was the winning pitcher in leading the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates to an 8-7 win over Dexter in a regular season baseball opener at Guilford on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pirates got things started quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Higgins and Gaw provided a spark at the top of the order with three hits each, including one run scored, and one double each. Higgins had two RBI.
Dexter grabbed a run in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to 3-2, before PCHS expanded the advantage to 6-2 with three runs in the third inning. The Tigers took the lead with six runs in the fifth inning. Blaine Gould powered the Tigers offense with three hits, while Kayden Kimball, Will Spratt, Ben Bourgoin, and Willis Reinhardt had two hits each.
The scored remained 8-6 until the Pirates came up big in the seventh inning. Gaw pitched a scoreless top half, including two strikeouts. Gaw would help himself get the pitching win as he smacked a walk off single that scored Brady Ball and sent PCHS to a dramatic win to start their season. Noah Kain helped make the comeback possible with two innings of scoreless relief pitching. Kain, Gabe Soctomah, and Quentin Blanchard had two hits each. Scott Chadbourne, Ty Cobb, and Gaige Tracy each had one hit. Soctomah scored two runs. PCHS (1-0) is scheduled to play at Schenck on Friday.
Payson Reinhardt and Zac Adams each had one hit for the Tigers. Adams had three RBI. Dexter (0-1) is scheduled to play at Searsport on Friday.
