Bangor Christian pitcher and reigning Class D Player of the Year Jason Libby would set a state record for being the first Maine high school pitcher to ever strikeout 22 batters in a single seven inning game last Monday, putting him in rarified air as only 19 other players ever in the history of high school baseball in all the United States have had 22 or more strikeouts in a game. Libby is the first however to do it since the pitch count rules were set across the country.
Libby would lead off with a homerun on the second pitch, which would prove to be enough in a game in which he no-hit Stearns as the Patriots would win 5-0 in Millinocket. Libby would also move himself into a second place all-time for most consecutive strikeouts across multiple starts (24), only behind Cameron Varga who played in Ohio who had 33. If Libby strikes out the next 10 consecutive batters he faces, he would stand alone atop that record with 34. He came ever so close to a perfect game against the Minutemen, as the only batter to reach was via a dropped third strike in the third inning. Bangor Christian is now 6-0 and in pursuit of a championship this year after falling to this same Stearns team last season in the playoffs. Libby has started the year off only allowing one run through three starts while also striking out 50 and walking none.
