In breaking news on Friday morning, it was announced that Big 10 power Indiana led by star forward and former Gorham High School standout MacKenzie Holmes, will visit the University of Maine for a non-conference women’s basketball matchup on Thursday, November 30 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
Holmes, who led the Hoosiers to a 28-4 record (16-2 Big 10), before falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Miami (Florida) in March, is coming off a career senior year where she averaged 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks. She decided to return to Bloomington for her fifth year of eligibility. She was named unanimous Big 10 First Team All-American, Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-Big 10 for 2022-23.
Holmes led Gorham to two state titles in high school as a freshman and sophomore. As a senior she averaged 30.1 points, 16.7 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per contest. She was named Gatorade Player of the Year for that outstanding senior season. She left the Rams as the all-time leader in school history in points, rebounds, and blocks. Rated a five star recruit by ESPN, Holmes committed to Indiana after offers from Boston College, Iowa State, Belmont, and James Madison University.
The game time for the November 30th matchup in Portland wasn’t announced as of yet. Maine is coming off a 16-14 season (11-5 America East) where they fell to Albany in the conference semifinals. All five of the usual starters are back this season for the Black Bears in Anne Simon, Adrianna Smith, Olivia Rockwood, Caroline Bornemann, and Paula Gallego.
