The University of Maine Field Hockey and women’s soccer teams were both in action on Sunday afternoon in non-conference play, with field hockey at home and women’s soccer playing on the road.
At the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono- Maine scored four first half goals, and held on to defeat Ohio University 5-3 to even their record at 2-2. Tereza Holubcova and Molly Mackesy each scored in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead, and then Mackesy got her second of the day early in the second and Saylor Kuefler also tallied to extend the advantage to 4-0. Mackesy now has five goals on the season. Holubcova scored her second of the game in the fourth quarter for Maine. Ohio University got goals from Kateyln Whittle, Pauline Hartlieb, and Meela Koop. Holubcova and Mackesy both finished with two goals and one assist. Mallory Drayer played the first half in net, while Jayde Temby played half number two as they combined to make one save. The Bobcats of Ohio from the Mid-American Conference dropped to 1-2 in the loss. Maine plays again on Friday when they host Northwestern at 2 p.m.
At Park Avenue Field in Fairfield, Connecticut- For the third time in four games, the Maine women’s soccer team battled to a tie with a 1-1 draw against Sacred Heart University. Abbey Thornton scored for the Black Bears for a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute of the match assisted by Abby Kraemer. Grace O’Hara was able to tie up the contest late for SHU to earn the tie tallying in the 87th minute unassisted. Maine had an 18-5 shots attempted margin (6-3 on goal). Kira Kutzinski made two saves in net, as the Black Bears record goes to 3-0-3. Kyran Thievon made five saves for the Pioneers out of the Northeast Conference, who goes to 0-3-2 on the season. Maine is at Boston University on Thursday at 6 p.m.
