The University of Maine Field Hockey and women’s soccer teams were both back at it Sunday afternoon in non-conference play. The soccer team was on the road trying to finish the non-conference schedule unbeaten, while field hockey hosted #20 UMass in Orono.
At the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono- Mali Herberhold scored what turned out to be the game winning goal in the third quarter, as #20 UMass held on to defeat Maine 3-2. The Minutemen scored the first two goals of the contest when Steph Gottwals and Hannah De Gast tallied in the first and second quarter respectively. The Black Bears cut into the deficit before halftime when Mallory Mackesy notched her sixth of the season on assists from Tereza Holubcova and Madisyn Harley with 5:39 left in the second quarter. The unassisted winner from Herberhold occured 3:14 into the third. Poppy Lambert scored on a penalty stroke with 3:03 left to play in the game, but despite pulling their goalie late Maine couldn’t find the equalizer. Mallory Drayer played the first half in net in the loss allowing two goals with no saves, while Jayde Temby played the final 26:57 making two stops. De Gast had a goal and an assist in the win for UMass (4-2) out of the Atlantic 10 Conference, and Brooke Richards made three saves in the cage. Maine (2-4) will open up America East play and try to break a two game losing streak on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they host the University of California-Davis.
At Flames Field in Chicago, Illinois- Abby Kraemer had two goals, including the game winner in the second half to lead the Maine women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago. The Black Bears cap off an unbeaten non-conference schedule at 5-0-3. Kraemer got the first tally of the match unassisted when UIC goalie Sara Sanabria slipped on a goalkick, and it came right to Kraemer who fired it in with her right foot past the out of position Sanabria in the 19th minute. The Flames tied it up late in the first half when Bella Baker scored off an assist by MaKenna Maloy at 38:26. Kraemer got the winner in the second stanza when she took a lead pass from Myla Schneider at the left corner of the box, and kicked it with her left foot trickling past the UIC goalie in the 68th minute. Kira Kutzinski preserved the victory when she stopped Kira Denies penalty shot with a diving save to her left with 3:39 left to play. Kutzinski made two saves in the win. Kraemer had six of the 12 attempted shots for her team on the afternoon, three on net with two of them going in. Sanabria and Trish Georgiou split the two halfs in goal making one save each in the defeat for the University of Illinois-Chicago (1-4-2) out of the Missouri Valley Conference. Maine now turns their attention to their eight America East games beginning with the University of Vermont, whom they’ll host next Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond.
