Mallory Mackesy scored two fourth quarter goals on Friday afternoon, leading the University of Maine to a 2-0 win over the University of California-Davis in the America East Field Hockey opener for both teams at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.
Maine dominated throughout, not allowing UC-Davis a shot on goal until there were seven minutes left in the game. Aggies goaltender Sarah Lopez was able to stand tall and keep the Black Bears off the board through three quarters. The game winner by Mackesy came 5:01 into the fourth, setup by a shot from Tereza Holubcova. Holubcova worked her way into the offensive zone and took a shot from the top of the circle that was stopped by Lopez, but Mackesy cleaned up the rebound in front and slammed it into the net. Mackesy added another for good measure with 4:07 remaining off another assist from Holubcova. With the two tallies, Mackesy now has eight goals in eight games for Maine.
Mallory Drayer faced just the one shot on net for the shutout win for Maine, as the Black Bears improve to 3-4 overall and now 1-0 in America East breaking a two game losing streak. Saylor Kuefler also added an assist on the first goal by Mackesy. UC-Davis (1-7, 0-1) has now lost three straight contests. Lopez made eight saves, as they were outshot 16-4 in attempts and 11-1 on goal. Maine is back in action Sunday as they host Stanford for a 12 p.m. start.
