The University of Maine Field Hockey and women’s soccer teams finished off a successful weekend of homecoming athletic games in Orono on Sunday afternoon, with a pair of shutout wins.
At the Maine Field Hockey Complex- Tereza Holubcova and Mallory Mackesy both scored second half goals, as Maine took a 2-0 non-conference field hockey win over Fairfield University. Holubcova got the game winner 7:25 into the third quarter unassisted for her fourth goal of the season, while Mackesy scored her 12th on assists from Madisyn Hartley and Eloise Penty with 4:24 left in the fourth period. Jayde Temby stopped all five shots in net for her first shutout of the year. Payton Rahn had six saves for Fairfield out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Stags had their six game win streak snapped, falling to 10-3 on the season. Maine (7-8) hits the road for more America East action on Friday when they visit Vermont at 3 p.m.
At Mahaney Diamond- Maine women’s soccer, after having their program best 12 game unbeaten streak snapped in their first loss of the season at UMass-Lowell on Thursday, bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Bryant University in America East play. The Black Bears dominated action, outshooting the Bulldogs 20-2 (10-1 on goal), and getting a first half tally from Abby Kraemer and a second half goal from Julie Lossius. Kira Kutzinski stopped the lone shot she saw in net in the win, notching her fifth shutout of the season. Kraemer and Lossius also had an assist each, assisting on each others goals. Kathryn McNeil had eight saves for Bryant, who falls to 6-5-3 and 2-3-2 in the conference. Maine (9-1-4, 4-1-1 in America East) will travel to New York to face Binghamton next Sunday.
