The first ever Division I women’s collegiate basketball game in Paris, France opened up the 2023-24 regular season on Monday. SEC power #6 South Carolina was able to pull away from ACC opponent #10 Notre Dame for a season opening 100-71 victory.
South Carolina after a closely contested first quarter, was able to outscore Notre Dame 24-8 in the second to take a 15-point halftime lead. The Gamecocks pulled away by outscoring the Irish 52-38 in the second half. Kamilla Cardoso led the way with 22 points and 15 rebounds. MiLaysia Fulwiley (15), Te-Hina Paopao (14), Sania Feagin (12), and Raven Johnson (11) also all scored in double figures. Fulwiley added six assists and six steals. Freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo scored 28 points in the loss for Notre Dame. Former Greely High School standout and transfer Anna Dewolfe had two points in 22 minutes in her first game in an Irish uniform. South Carolina is led by head coach Dawn Staley, winning national championships in 2017 and 2022 and lost in the Final Four to Iowa last spring.
