BANGOR- The Ellsworth Eagles set a new girls tournament record (across all classes) with 14 made three-point field goals on Saturday afternoon, with six of them coming from Lizzie Boles in cruising past the Presque Isle Wildcats 76-35 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class B quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.
It was a slow start for defending state champion and unbeaten top seed Ellsworth. It was tied early on at 3-3, before a second Boles three-pointer of the first quarter started a 20-7 run to put the Eagles ahead for good as they led 23-10 after eight minutes. Boles had 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first half. Presque Isle hung around, and would cut it to 33-23 when Nora Curtis missed the second of two foul shots and the rebound came to Jan Curtis who knocked down a three-pointer. But that would be as close as they’d be the rest of the day. Ellsworth ended the period scoring eight of the final 12 points to increase their advantage to 14 at the break, and would outscore the Wildcats 35-8 in the second half to move on to a Wednesday afternoon semifinal.
Boles added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her point total in the Ellsworth win. Grace Jaffray contributed 18 points, six rebounds, six steals, three assists, and one blocked shot. Abby Radel and Elise Sargent also got into double figures for the 19-0 Eagles with 14 and 10 points respectively. Jan Curtis led Presque Isle in the loss with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jorja Maynard chipped in nine points, and Nora Curtis finished with eight points and seven rebounds as the #8 Wildcats end their season at 10-10. Ellsworth faces #4 Caribou at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals.
