The Husson Eagles and Maine Black Bears baseball teams both finished up their home weekend conference series on Sunday afternoon. Husson was trying to keep their win streak alive in a seven inning doubleheader on Senior Day with UMaine-Farmington after winning both ends of a twinbill on Saturday, while Maine was looking for their first sweep in any series on the season by taking on Binghamton.
Game 1 at the Winkin Complex, Bangor- Husson used a five run second inning, and cruised to a 10-1 win over UMaine-Farmington in the opener of the doubleheader. The Beavers struck early for a run in the top of the first inning on a fielders choice RBI by Sam Parsell. The Eagles then would score 10 unanswered, scoring three in the home half of the first to take the lead for good on a Jackson Curtis RBI single, a wild pitch that scored Keegan Cyr, and an RBI single by Matt Holmes. They padded their advantage in the second inning on a bases loaded walk by Akira Warren, a Holmes RBI single, and a three-run triple by Tanner Evans to make it 8-1. Hunter Curtis and Holmes later added RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth to end the scoring. Holmes led the way with three hits and three RBI, while Jackson Curtis and Hunter Curtis had two hits each. Alex Smith (3-1) picked up the pitching win allowing one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Matt Marquis and Nate Coombs had the hits for UMaine-Farmington, and Will Harriman (1-5) took the loss on the mound giving up eight runs on eight hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Game 2 in Bangor- A Jack Cote first inning bases loaded walk is all Husson needed in completing the weekend sweep with a 5-0 win. Hunter Curtis and Warren added RBI singles in the second, while Curtis also scored on an error and Holmes chipped in an RBI single in the fourth. Hunter Curtis, Jackson Curtis, and Warren each had two hits. Matt Wallingford (3-2) was fantastic on the hill allowing just one hit with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Aaron Goschke (1-4) took the loss for UMaine-Farmington allowing all five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. The Beavers fall to 8-25 and 4-10 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Husson has now won eight straight games improving to 16-9 overall and 12-2 in the NAC. The Eagles play a single non-conference game at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday, before heading to Vermont for a conference doubleheader at Vermont State University-Lyndon on Wednesday. They’ll finish the regular season at the University of Maine-Presque Isle with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Sunday.
At Mahaney Diamond in Orono- Binghamton put the game out of reach early, scoring five runs in the first inning and 10 more in the second to salvage the finale with an emphatic 21-4 win over Maine. The Bearcats had some players with big days at the plate, as five batters had at least two hits each. Evin Sullivan and Devan Bade both had four hits and four RBI. Sullivan scored four times, and Bade twice. Zach Rogacki had three hits and three knocked in, including a homerun. Spencer Howell (1-1) picked up the win on the mound allowing two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Binghamton is now 17-22 and 7-11 in America East. It was a rough day on the hill for Noah Lewis (0-8), as he was roughed up for 12 runs (seven earned) on eight hits with five walks in just 1.1 innings in the defeat for Maine. Jeremiah Jenkins led the offense with three hits, including a two-run homerun his 19th of the season. Dean O’Neill also knocked in a run on three hits. Former Old Town High School standout Gabe Gifford was fantastic in his relief outing, giving up just two hits and no runs with two walks and eight strikeouts in 3.0 innings. The Black Bears earned their first series win of the season on the weekend, as their record now stands at 10-29 and 6-8 in conference play.
The remaining schedule for Maine has them on the road for a three game America East series at UMBC beginning Thursday, before a single non-conference game at Dartmouth on Wednesday, May 8.
