The Husson softball team continued their winning ways on Thursday evening, setting a new program record in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader over Bates College in a pair of games played down in Brunswick at Bowdoin College.
Game 1- Husson, playing as the visiting team, jumped on Bates for six runs in the first two innings and held on for a 9-5 win. Bulla McCabe hit a run scoring triple in the first, and scored herself on a throwing error on the same play. Kenzie Dore and Josie Cornell both hit two-run doubles in the top of the third to extend their lead to 6-0. The Bobcats responded in the bottom half with their first scoring of the day. They would tally three runs on an RBI groundout by Elizabeth Pellini, an RBI triple from Sienna Pietrasiewicz, and an Eagles error that allowed another run to cross the plate to cut the deficit to 6-3. Husson pushed their lead back to six in the fourth inning when Lydia Rice scored on an error on a ball hit to the third baseman by Tori Exel, followed by a two-run homerun to centerfield by Dore. Bates would score twice in their last at bat, and had two runners still on base with two outs but Katie Raymond made a diving catch in center on a sinking line drive hit by Emma Yen to end it. Danielle Masterson (9-1) got the win in the circle allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts in the complete game effort. Dore had three hits and four RBI, while McCabe and Cornell added two hits a piece. Yen had three hits, and Zariya Anderson had two for Bates. Isabella Albro (2-10) took the pitching defeat giving up seven earned runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings.
Game 2- Husson completed the sweep using some late scoring to secure a 3-0 win. In a scoreless game in the top of the sixth with one out, Cornell singled and Kiara McLeod walked. Emily Dunbar then doubled to centerfield scoring Cornell and McLeod also would score when Anderson dropped the ball for an error when trying to pick it up in center. The Eagles got some insurance in the seventh when Raymond led off with a triple to right center, and would score on a passed ball. Raymond had two hits to lead the way, and freshman Ana Lang (14-2) was good once again in the circle in picking up the victory going the complete game allowing eight hits while walking none and striking out 12. Yen and Delaney Rankin had a pair of hits each for Bates, with Rankin (6-9) being tagged with the pitching loss allowing one earned run on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Bobcats fall to 8-21 on the season.
Husson has now won a program record 23 games in a row, improving to 28-4 with their last loss on March 7 nearly two months ago on the season opening spring trip in Florida. The Eagles cap off the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of New England at home on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m., before traveling to the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday for a NAC doubleheader with the Owls at noon.
