Patriots name Brissett as starting QB

August 29, 2024

Head coach Jerod Mayo announced on Thursday morning that the New England Patriots have chosen veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett as their starter over #3 overall draft pick Drake Maye.

Brissett has played two full seasons in the NFL over his eight year career, with Indianapolis in 2017 and in Cleveland in 2022. This is his second stint with New England, as he appeared in three games in 2016 with the club while starter Tom Brady was serving a suspension amid deflategate. With the Colts in 2017 and 2019 and the Browns in 2022 he played in a total of 47 games, throwing a combined 43 touchdowns with 19 interceptions. He played in three contests with Washington last season with three TD passes.

Maye, who seemed to outplay Brissett in the preseason, is the future of the organization and should be interesting to track his progress and whether he’ll sit or find playing time in 2024. Maye, who spent three seasons (two as the starting QB) in the ACC with the North Carolina TarHeels, threw for almost 8,000 yards over the past two years at Chapel Hill accounting for 78 touchdowns (62 passing, 16 rushing). New England, coming off a 4-13 campaign in 2023 that led to the firing of future Hall of Famer and long time coach Bill Belichik, opens their regular season on Sunday, September 8 on the road in Cincinnati against the Bengals.
