The Springfield College Pride rushed for over 500 yards on Saturday afternoon, building a 49-7 halftime lead in rolling to a 76-7 non-conference football win over the Husson Eagles at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
The Pride went up early just 2:23 into the first quarter on a 22-yard touchdown run by Arsen Shtefan, but the Eagles answered that on a 47-yard scoring play by Max Clark to wide receiver Nason Berthelette to make it 7-7. Springfield took over from there scoring the final 69 points of the contest, pushing in front for good just 55 seconds later on a 53-yard quarterback keeper by Jacob Silvester.
Clark went 15-27 passing for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the loss for Husson. Jed Lober coming off his huge five touchdown performance in the season opening victory, was held to just 30 yards on 11 carries. Berthelette had four catches for 92 yards and the lone Eagles score. CJ Nicely (12), Ryan Banister (11), and Ethan Turgeon (10) led the defense in total tackles. Springfield (2-0), who is always a leader in all of Division III running the football, only passed five times for 39 yards. The QB Silvester led the ground game with four attempts for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Shtefan carried 12 times for 109 yards and two scores, while Blane Hart (5 runs, 79 yards) also got into the endzone twice. The Pride as a team carried 57 times for 560 yards, scoring nine times. Husson (1-1) continues non-conference action next Saturday as they travel to Norwich University for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
