The University of Maine women’s soccer and field hockey teams continued non-conference play Sunday afternoon in Massachusetts.

In Worcester, Massachusetts- Jordane Pinette scored 1:25 into the first half, assisted by Kristina Kelly and Lara Kirkby, to give Maine women’s soccer a 1-0 win over Holy Cross.

The Black Bears only had two shots on goal, but got one past Crusaders goalie Julia Walsh early on for the only one that mattered. Freshman Grace Wilson, who had been finishing up her time with the Australian Under 20 team in her native country, made her first career start and stopped all five shots she faced in the Maine victory.

That is the final non-conference game of the season for Maine (4-1-2), as they now head into their eight game America East schedule beginning with Binghamton next Sunday at Mahaney Diamond in Orono with kickoff set for 12 p.m. Walsh ended up with one save in the defeat for 3-6 Holy Cross out of the Patriot League.

At New Balance Field in Boston- Payton Anderson scored a game winning goal with 6:21 left in the fourth quarter, sending Boston University past Maine 2-1 in field hockey action.

BU (3-3) struck first on a goal by Caroline O’Brien assisted by Olivia Hammer 37 seconds into the third quarter to make it 1-0 Terriers. Maine got the equalizer on a tally from Alexandra Sacker on a helper from Poppy Lambert with 9:22 left in the game. After Anderson scored to put the hosts ahead, Maine had some great chances down the stretch with some penalty corners in the final minutes but couldn’t find the back of the cage in losing their second straight game.

The shots on goal were even in the contest 6-6, and Maine goalie Rozarie Mrazova made four stops in the loss. The Black Bears had a 10-3 edge on penalty corners. Kate Thomason made five saves in the win for Boston University. The Black Bears (4-3) will host Merrimack College in more non-conference action next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Orono.
