BANGOR- The Husson men’s and women’s basketball teams got back into North Atlantic Conference action for the first time since December 13th by hosting Vermont State University-Lyndon at Newman Gymnasium on Monday evening. The Eagles ended up sweeping, with both teams hitting triple digits in points scored.
In the women’s game- Husson blew the game open with a run of 30-2 that started in the first quarter and continued into the second, culminating in a 103-44 victory to improve to 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Freshman Saige Evans (Old Town) had a career-high 14 points, while also adding four rebounds and three steals as Husson built a 55-19 halftime lead in rolling to their fourth win overall on the season. Maci Beals (Central Aroostook) and Makaelyn Porter (Southern Aroostook) both had 12 points, and Alana Seward also got into figures with 10 points. It was also a career-high for Beals, while Aubrey Kachnovich (Spruce Mountain) and Sam Haber put up career-highs with eight and five points respectively. 15 of the 16 Eagles that played scored in the victory. Sage Smith had 19 points in the loss for the Hornets of Vermont State University-Lyndon, who fall to 3-7 and 1-1 in the NAC.
In the men’s game- After the Hornets had an early 11-9 lead in the first half, Husson used an 18-0 run to take over the advantage for good for their seventh straight victory staying unbeaten in conference play to cap off the sweep in a 102-75 win.
Graduate guard Jeremy Moronta had 11 of the 18 points during the 18-0 first half Eagles spurt, that included three layups and a three-pointer to finish off the run as Husson would end up building a 25 point halftime lead in their ninth win of the season. Four players scored in double figures led by Riles Neff who had a game-high 22 points, while Moronta finished with 19. Freshman Dylan Burpee (Southern Aroostook) added 11 points off the bench, and Connor Heald chipped in 10 points as 13 Eagles got on the scoresheet. Wesley McIntyre had 15 points, while Deshawn Ford and Tyler Bergmans had 13 and 11 points respectively in the loss for Vermont State University-Lyndon who falls to 4-9 and 1-1 in NAC action.
Both Husson teams will play again in conference play on Tuesday at home, welcoming in Vermont State University-Johnson. The Eagles women’s team (4-9, 3-1 in NAC) at 3 p.m., followed by the men (9-5, 4-0) at 5 p.m.
