Husson softball sweeps Thomas in their NAC openers

BANGOR- The Husson Eagles ran their win streak to nine games on Friday, sweeping Thomas College 4-0 and 3-1 in a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at O’Keefe Field. The contests were the NAC openers for Husson.

In game one- Lexi Volinsky (Noble) had two hits including a big two-run single, and Sky Johnson fired a complete game three-hitter as the Eagles made it four straight games with a shutout. Bulla McCabe and Lydia Rice (Winthrop) also singled in a run each. Johnson (8-3) allowed four hits and didn’t walk a batter, while striking 13 in picking up the victory. Mackenzie Toner (Erskine) had two hits for the Terriers.

In game two- The Eagles took advantage of two errors by the Terriers in the fourth inning to score three times to complete the sweep. Thomas did end the Husson shutout streak at 34 innings when Megan Oberholzer had an RBI double in the sixth. The guests had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but Ana Lang (Searsport) ended it with a strikeout of Abby Forone to finish off her complete game effort in the circle. Lang (4-3) allowed one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Addy Boyce (MDI) was the tough luck loser for Thomas as she gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Terriers fall to 9-16 and 2-2 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Husson improves to 15-9 and gets off to a 2-0 start in conference play. The Eagles head back into non-conference action when they host Bates College for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
