Maine softball on a 26 game regular season conference losing streak after being swept at Albany

The University of Maine softball team was swept on the road in Albany on Saturday afternoon losing both ends of an America East doubleheader to the Great Danes 7-2 and 5-3.

In game one, Bailey Snowberger and Gabby Papushka provided the lone runs for the Black Bears with RBI doubles in the seventh inning. Snowberger and Papushka had two hits each, while Alysen Reith took the loss in the circle allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Caitlyn Frederick had three hits and three RBI for the Great Danes.

In game two, Maine had a 3-1 lead into the last of the fifth inning before the Great Danes scored twice in that frame and twice in the sixth to complete the sweep. Keira Inman, Kyrah Haba-Dailey, and Snowberger had the RBI hits for the Black Bears. Reith (5-17) suffered a loss for the second time on the day, this time in relief of starter Madison Simmerman. Mary Kate Murray had three RBI for Albany, as they improve to 18-18 and 8-4 in America East.

Maine now has an overall record of 8-31, also dropping to 0-13 in conference play. The Black Bears last regular season America East win was on April 7 of last year, a 5-1 decision over Bryant University. They did score a conference win in their opening game of the postseason last spring also over Bryant, but in the regular season they now hold a 26-game losing streak in league play. They’ll play a single game at Albany to finish the series on Sunday.
