Husson softball sweeps Bates with two shutouts on Tuesday

The Husson softball team extended their win streak on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping and shutting out Bates College in a non-conference doubleheader 1-0 and 6-0 at O’Keefe Field in Bangor.

In the opening contest- The pitching of Sky Johnson (9-3) in the circle led the Eagles to the victory. Johnson allowed a two-out single to Zariya Anderson in the first inning, but then set down the next 19 Bobcat batters in a row while walking none and striking out six in the complete game effort to get the win. Bulla McCabe hit a one-out solo homerun to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth to give Husson all they needed. McCabe had two hits. Delaney Rankin (9-4) took the pitching loss for Bates allowing one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

In game two- Morgan Tainter hit a second inning two-run homerun, and Ana Lang (Searsport) took care of the rest in the circle with the second complete game shutout on the day to pick up the sweep. Lydia Rice (Winthtop) also added two RBI. The sophomore Lang (5-3) picked up the win and allowed six hits while walking three and striking out nine. Isabel Bettencourt and Emily Kennedy each had two hits for Bates College who falls to 14-12 on the season. Husson has only allowed two earned runs over their last 10 games, while also improving to 10-0 at home.

Husson has now won 11 games in a row in improving to 17-9. The Eagles will prepare for three doubleheaders in three days, beginning Thursday at the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action. They will then get back into conference play with two road games at Lesley University on Friday, and two at home vs the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday. The Saturday home doubleheaders vs UMPI is Senior Day at O’Keefe Field.
