On Senior Day at O’Keefe Field in Bangor on Monday afternoon- The Husson Eagles honored Sky Johnson, Kiara McLeod (Oxford Hills), Bulla McCabe, Tatyanna Biamby (Gorham), Julia Gregiore (Massabesic), and Tori Exel (Noble) and then swept the University of Maine Presque-Isle 12-0 and 15-2 in a NAC softball doubleheader.
In game one- Gregiore hit a two-run first inning triple for the only runs the Eagles needed in the shortened mercy rule contest in five innings. Gregiore also scored on the play on an error, and had three hits and four RBI to help lead the way. Camryn King (Nokomis) also added had two hits and four RBI, including a three-run inside the park homerun. Gregiore later hit a second triple for her fourth run driven in, and also doubled in her three plate appearances. Exel and Lydia Rice (Winthrop) contributed two hits each. Sky Johnson (11-3) pitched all 5.0 innings allowing just two hits while walking none and striking out nine. Gracelyn Walsh and Avery VonKadich had the hits for the Owls, while Megan Bucholz lost in the circle.
In game two- UMPI took their only lead of the day without the benefit of a hit in the top of the first inning, before Husson took over in the bottom half. McCabe tied it with an RBI single, and then Gregiore continued her big afternoon by smoking a line drive that eluded centerfielder Zoe Stewart and went for their second inside the park three-run homer of the doubleheader to make it 4-1. They went on to score seven times in the second and ended it by mercy in five innings. The Eagles had five players with multiple hits with Gregiore and King driving in three runs each. Ana Lang (6-4) pitched the first 3.0 innings to pick up the victory giving up two runs on one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts. Stewart had the only hit for the Owls, while Bucholz (1-8) suffered her second defeat in the circle. UMPI falls to 2-20 and 1-5 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Husson is now 22-10 and 6-0 in league play and will play a non-conference road doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) on Tuesday in Standish. The Eagles wrap up the regular season on Saturday with two NAC games at UMaine-Farmington.
